The audition process was a lengthy one for the original Power Rangers and included a few marquee names trying out for different parts.
That included Jason David Frank, who eventually became the Green Ranger. During an appearance at Florida Supercon alongside Amy Jo Johnson (via Debra Gallagher), he revealed that in the audition he read the part of another Ranger.

“So I auditioned for Walter’s, they gave me Walter’s script because they didn’t give me a Tommy script. I just read Walter’s role and lines and stuff and then talking about Zordon, which I had no clue what I was doing.
Frank also revealed that he tried out alongside Thuy Trang, who would eventually win the part of Trini Kwan, the Yellow Ranger. The part of the Black Ranger Zack Taylor would go to Walter Jones, and it’s hard to envision the part without him.
Like the other Rangers, Jones enjoyed the recent reboot but did identify one particular aspect it could’ve used.
“[It had] no Hip Hop Kido! It was a major motivator for so many fans to explore physical arts, dancing, gymnastics, parkour, etcโฆ My character was the only character with that ability. It should have been included in some fashion.”
