First Star Trek: Discovery Comic, Novel Covers And Details Revealed

Television isn’t the only medium that the new Star Trek: Discovery series is debuting this fall.

CBS has revealed the covers and story synopses for the first Star Trek: Discovery novel and comic book.

Star Trek: Discovery – Desperate Hours will be written by veteran Star Trek novelist David Mack. The novel is a prequel to Star Trek: Discovery that flashes back to when Michael Burnham was only acting first officer on the USS Shenzhou. Her time to prove herself comes when a Federation colony comes under attack from a mysterious alien aggressor. Burnham may have to defy Starfleet orders to save the lives of the colonists.

The Star Trek: Discovery comic book will dive into the backstories of the Klingon characters form the new series, including T’Kuvma, the leader of the Klingons who comes into conflict with Starfleet as the new series begins. The Star Trek: Discovery comic book is being written by Mike Johnson, who has written several Star Trek titles for publisher IDW Entertainment, will write the new series. He’ll be re-teaming with Tony Shasteen, the artist who worked with Johnson on the Kelvin timeline series Star Trek: Boldly Go.

Star Trek: Discovery series writer Kirsten Beyer is coordinated with the authors on both projects to help integrate the stories smoothly into the main series.

Set 10 years prior to the five-year mission of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery follows the adventures of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters, and new missions while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.

Aboard the Starship Shenzhou, Lieutenant Michael Burnham, a human woman raised and educated among Vulcans, is promoted to acting first officer. But if she wants to keep the job, she must prove to Captain Philippa Georgiou that she deserves to have it.

She gets her chance when the Shenzhou must protect a Federation colony that is under attack by an ancient alien vessel that has surfaced from the deepest fathoms of the planet’s dark, uncharted sea.

As the menace from this mysterious vessel grows stronger, Starfleet declares the colony expendable in the name of halting the threat. To save thousands of innocent lives, Burnham must infiltrate the alien ship. But to do so she needs to face the truth of her troubled past, and seek the aid of a man she has tried to avoid her entire life—until now.
