Jennifer Muro Talks About Writing Iconic Heroes In Star Wars: Forces Of Destiny

Disney and Lucasfilm are collaborating on yet another Star Wars animated series, but this one explores the vastly different eras that we’ve already seen in across eight films and two cartoons. What sets this show apart is that the powerful women of the Star Wars universe get the spotlight.

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny has been airing on Disney‘s YouTube channel ahead of its broadcast premiere on the Disney Channel on July 9. The Anthology series takes place within the stories we know and love, fleshing out events that weren’t depicted on screen.

ComcBook.com managed to speak with series writer Jennifer Muro about Forces of Destiny, what sets it apart from other stories in the Star Wars galaxy, and why she enjoys creating these adventures for the wonderful women in the canon.

“It’s the unseen moments from time and space for all the beloved characters. The original trilogy through Clone Wars and Rebels and The Force Awakens,” Muro said. “It’s super exciting to see a lot of these characters come together in ways we hadn’t seen before.”

One of the coolest aspects of Forces of Destiny is the involvement of many of the original actors for the various characters, such as Daisy Ridley, Felicity Jones, Ashley Eckstein, and Tiya Sircar, as well as Lupita Nyong’o reprising her role as Maz Kanata to narrate each episode in the series.

“Having the feature actresses is fantastic, of course. To have stories with Daisy, Daisy’s amazing,” Muro said, before turning to the voice actors who have been involved with the franchise for years now. “We have a lot of the Rebel actresses and they’re phenomenal and I’ll put them right up there with all the feature actresses. It’s an amazing array to work with.”

But one of Muro’s highlights came when she worked in her favorite era in the franchise with one of the most iconic characters in the recently released episode about Princess Leia’s time with the Ewoks.

“Leia was great, Leia was fantastic. To get to write for her in the original trilogy was a dream come true,” Muro said. “I’m a huge original trilogy person. [Return of the] Jedi’s my favorite. Most people say Empire [Strikes Back] but I just love Jedi so much, mostly because of Luke’s journey up to that point. I think the change in that is just amazing. To write for some of that was a dream come true.”

Rey, Ahsoka Tano, Jyn Erso, Princess Leia, Sabine Wren, and other icons of a galaxy far, far away will take center stage in Star Wars Forces of Destiny — a new animated micro-series and initiative celebrating some of Star Wars’ most beloved and inspirational characters. Announced by Disney and Lucasfilm today, Star Wars Forces of Destiny launches in July with a series of animated shorts (2-3 minutes each) on Disney YouTube, exploring all-new adventures of the fan-favorites.

A two-part TV special featuring eight additional shorts will follow on Disney Channel in fall 2017. Significantly, Daisy Ridley (Rey), Felicity Jones (Jyn Erso), Tiya Sircar (Sabine Wren), Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka Tano), and Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata, narrating the series) will all reprise their roles for the show. Developed by Lucasfilm Animation, Star Wars Forces of Destiny will remain true to the Star Wars canon, showing how choices both big and small ultimately shape the destinies of beloved characters.
