Today, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story finally reached theaters after a long trek through production. The sci-fi thriller adds onto the extensive Star Wars canon. The film is set between Episode III and IV and follows the group of Rebels who managed to steal plans to the Imperial Death Star. The film is the first standalone from Lucasfilm, but it surely won’t be the last. The studio is already developing a movie based on Han Solo’s youth, and one of the stars of the film is now talking about how he will make his character cool.
Recently, Donald Glover did a roundtable interview for The Hollywood Reporter along with Jon Favreau and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The actor was asked about being cast as a young Lando Calrissian, and the comedic actor had plenty to say about the role.
“It was the first action figure I ever had. I remember my dad giving it to me. I had a Darth Vader one and this one that I lost the cape,” Glover recalled. “The lightsaber came out of the arm, and I ripped that out. I remember Lando really well. He was like the only black guy in space. And he was the cool one. I just realized, he still has to be cool. And cool is an interesting thing.”
The actor then went on to explain exactly what he meant by cool, and the anecdote involved Black Mirror.
“I was watching Black Mirror, and there's an episode where they go through time and in the '50s, there's a nerd, and by the time he gets to the 2000s, he's just a hipster. He's not a nerd anymore. Cool changes depending on the perspective. Also, it's fun because [the Han Solo movie is set] before [Empire Strikes Back], so he's still figuring it out a little bit, which is fun,” he said.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits US theaters December 16, 2016. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."
