Today has seen a whirlwind of developments regarding the ongoing production of the Han Solo spinoff movie. News that directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller would no longer be directing the latest Star Wars anthology film hit earlier today, and ever since there has been a downpour of rumors and speculation regarding the future of the film.
Both groups issued statements regarding the split, with Miller and Lord saying "we normally aren't fans of the phrase 'creative differences' but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew."
The statement from Kennedy says "Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it's become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we've decided to part ways."
Lucasfilm is said to be announcing a replacement director imminently, with rumors bubbling about Ron Howard, Joe Johnston, and screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan taking over the duties.
The report from Variety cites a "culture clash" occurring early on in the production, with one source stating that Kennedy didn't even like the way the directors "folded their socks." It also stated that even Kasdan questioned choices the directors made, but they had felt above such second guessing after putting in work in Hollywood on prior movies.
The film is scheduled to undergo several weeks of reshoots later this summer, and it has just a few weeks left of the normal production before wrapping principal photography.
This type of departure from directors is very irregular for a production of this magnitude. It remains to be seen how their firing will reflect the overall movie, which has had their involvement since the earliest stages.
The untitled Han Solo: A Star Wars Movie spinoff is still scheduled for release less than a year from now on May 25, 2018.
