A little while ago, Disney debuted the first episode of #GoRogue, a four-part, stop-action webseries that is designed to unveil the toys for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which will be in stores at the end of March.
It took a group of superfans hours of effort and hundreds of toys to make it a reality, and so the good folks at Lucasfilm, who know just how obsessive Star Wars fans can be (in a good way, we promise!), have provided ComicBook.com with a look behind the scenes of the video's production.
You can check out the video below and a gallery of behind-the-scenes images attached.
Written, directed and produced by the superfan team, the videos will not only serve as a unique way to reveal the toys but will also kick off a global UGC contest that asks fans to get creative and tell their own "Rogue Stories" for a chance to attend a screening of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story at Lucasfilm in San Francisco and see their own story on the big screen.
Debuting Wednesday, August 31 on the official Star Wars YouTube channel, episode one of the four-part #GoRogue series will introduce key toys from Hasbro, LEGO, JAKKS Pacific, Mattel, Funko and Disney Store with more new products revealed in September episodes before becoming available at retail on September 30.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first of Disney/Lucasfilm's new stand-alone films, live-action movies that are set outside of the "Episode" movie structure that largely follows the Skywalker family. The story for Rogue One is born from the crawl at the start of the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.
"It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire," the opening crawl read. "During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."
Rogue One tells the story of those Rebel spies.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards, and stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, and Diego Luna. It hits theaters December 16, 2016.
