When fans learned that Rian Johnson had wrapped production on Star Wars: Episode VIII, excitement for the upcoming film grew at warp speed. However, that hype is now starting to flicker out faster than a damaged hyper drive following a new update from Lupita Nyong’o. The actress has revealed she’s not yet filmed for the next Star Wars installment.

Speaking with Collider, Lupita was asked about what it was like to work with Rian Johnson on Star Wars. However, she said she hasn’t gotten the chance to work with him yet. “Rian! I haven’t worked with him yet; I’ve yet to shoot,” she said. “That’s in my future.”
Of course, fans have not actually seen Lupita appear in-person when it comes to Star Wars. The actress plays Maz Kanata, a wise humanoid-alien who has lived for over a thousand years. The former pirate now runs an interstellar bar on a planet called Takodana where she gave Rey the long-lost lightsaber of Luke Skywalker back in Episode VII – The Force Awakens.
Some fans are starting to wonder whether Lupita will still star in Episode VIII, but the actress has indicated she will get to work with Rian soon. Considering her character’s CGI depiction, it would not be strange for Lupita to shoot for Star Wars outside of the film’s original schedule. The actress announced she’d reprise her role of Maz earlier this year during an on-air interview. When asked if she’d return, Lupita answered with a resounding yes.
During her most recent interview, Lupita also talked about her excitement over Black Panther. The actress was confirmed to play Nakia in the film at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. The character will be one of Wakanda’s Dora Milaje, an all-female royal guard for the country’s king. When she was asked about the film, Lupita couldn’t help but gush over it.
“I am so excited,” she said. “I can’t wait to kick ass and learn all sorts of cool things that my body can do. I’m so looking forward to it, to work with Ryan Coogler who’s such an incredible human being. It’s gonna be fun, and the cast. The cast!”
Lupita will be joined by an all-star cast of actors for the film. Chadwick Boseman will reprise his role as T’Challa/Black Panther from Captain America: Civil War. Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead) will play a Dora Milaje named Okoye. Michael B. Jordan is set to play Erik Killmonger while Andy Serkis takes on Ulysses Klaw.
Star Wars: Episode VIII will hit theaters next year on December 15 with Marvel’s Black Panther to follow on February 16 2018.
