When it comes to on-screen movie bloopers, one of most memorable of all time took place in the very first Star Wars. The scene in question features a squad of Stormtroopers confronting C-3PO and R2-D2 as they cover for Luke Skywalker and Han Solo in the Death Star. When the troopers enter the control room, one of the Stormtroopers had difficulty seeing where the door was and hits his head on it when entering, with viewers even seeing him readjust his helmet. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is now available on VOD and coming to Blu-ray this Tuesday, and the VFX team recently revealed a blooper that made its way to the theatrical cut.
Animation Supervisor Hal Hickel recently gave a keynote presentation all about the film's visual effects, paying special attention to the character K-2SO. Alan Tudyk provided the voice for the droid, while also appearing on set in a motion capture suit so he could interact with the co-stars while also giving reference points for the animation team to use later.
Director Gareth Edwards hired Tudyk knowing just how talented of a comedic performer he is and encouraged the actor to go all-out. With such a big budget film that had many precisely choreographed moments, Tudyk's portrayal of the reprogrammed droid was one of the few elements of the film in which Edwards could step back and just watch what happened.
During one scene, K-2SO is traveling with Cassian (Diego Luna) and Jyn (Felicity Jones) back to their ship when they encounter a group of Stormtroopers. Having to quickly explain what he was doing with the two, K-2SO gave the excuse that he was escorting prisoners. When Cassian tried to further explain why he was under arrest, K-2SO struck him, which was improvised and Luna didn't know was coming, which caused him to begin laughing. In the finished sequence, Cassian can be seen with his hand over his face to try to stop himself from laughing, which can be seen in the final film.
As you can see in the clip above, Tudyk's comedic timing was excellent and anyone would have a tough time keeping a straight face in the situation. Keep your eyes out for this scene when you pick up the Blu-ray on Tuesday!
