Gareth Edwards might be done with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but he's still unveiling easter eggs and mythology secrets months after it hit theaters, heading into the Blu-ray and DVD release next week.
The latest and possibly last bit of information to glean from his press rounds has to do with the interesting set up of the city of major city on Jedha.
All of the pieces are there visually, but no one might have guessed had the director not stated it outright. It has to do with why Jedha is even considered a holy place at all and the history behind it.
While speaking with Collider, Edwards revealed Jedha's importance and why there was an abundance of the valuable Kyber crystals there to begin with.
"If you look at the establishing shot of Jedha from above, the layout of it is this giant, circular rock formation around where Jedha is—the idea was that there was a meteor impact that hit Jedha and it came at such a force that it was what created the Kyber Crystals at the center of that crater of impact," Edwards said.

"So Jedha is like this very unique place in the galaxy in that it's got a very high density of Kyber Crystals, which is what the Jedi need for lightsabers. So it became this holy city as a result of that meteor impact. But that must've happened maybe millions of years ago. We tried to tell that story in the establishing shot, you see the circular formation and at the heart of it is Jedha city."
When watching the film and looking at the establishing shot when the crew arrives to the planet/moon, it makes too much sense.
These details just go to show how much thought and creativity goes into making a film set in the Star Wars universe and how much they consider the already-established lore when making design choices.
Here's hoping the Rogue One's special features are packed with just as many interesting revelations to entice us dive into every aspect of them.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is now available on Digital HD. It will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on April 4.
