Variety has just announced that the actor has landed the role of the Sheriff of Nottingham in the upcoming film, Robin Hood: Origins.
The movie follows the tale of legendary outlaw Robin Hood, and his infamous rise to power. Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Eddie The Eagle) stars as the title character, with Jamie Foxx (The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Django Unchained) signed on to play his loyal partner, Little John. Jamie Dornan (50 Shades Of Grey, Once Upon A Time) is also set to star in the film as Will Scarlett, the half-brother of Robin Hood.
The Sheriff Of Nottingham is the villain of Robin Hood’s story, as he aims to keep the opression of his people at an all-time high. While Robin Hood is attempting to free others from the opression of the government, the sheriff is doing exactly the opposite.
This marks Mendelsohn’s third major role as a villain, fresh off of his take as the main antagonist in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Before that, Mendelsohn earned an Emmy for his role in the Netflix original series, Bloodline.
Robin Hood: Origins is being directed by Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror) from a script written by Joby Harold (Awake, King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword). The film is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and is set to hit theaters on March 23, 2017.
