Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has already gotten off to a strong start in its first week of release, earning over $400 million at the worldwide box office. Now the Christmas holiday is approaching, bringing with it one of the biggest movie weekends of the year.
Early projections state that Rogue One is set to walk away from Christmas with plenty more money in its pocket, easily winning the holiday domestic box office from its multiple competitors at the Cineplex. Expected to take number 2 is the animated feature Sing.
Variety reports that after $15 million on Wednesday, and $16.7 million on Thursday, Rogue One is estimated to walk away with about $160 million between the December 21 - 26 holiday frame. After the holiday, Rogue One should surpass Doctor Strange, Suicide Squad, and Batman v Superman to become the fifth largest domestic grosser of 2016.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is in theaters now. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."
