As Star Wars approaches the 40th anniversary of the original film's release in theaters, Disney and Lucasfilm are commemorating the occasion by offering some unique that collectors will be sure to cherish.
After all, collectors helped propel the Star Wars Universe into the cultural zeitgeist over the course of its history. Now Disney has commissioned the New Zealand Mint to give one of the hobby's historic niche's a unique new addition.
New Zealand Mint is now taking orders on the Star Wars 40th Anniversary 1oz Silver Coin, a unique coin licensed by Disney featuring a replica image of the original poster from the film's release in 1977.
Though it's denomination $2 in New Zealand's currency, it's value will be much more after it sells out, as there will only be 10,000 minted in its run. New Zealand Mint is currently taking orders for $80 (in US dollars) each.
The fine silver coin comes packaged in a perspex casing to showcase both sides of the coin and will come with a certificate of authenticity.
Coin-centric hobby site AgAuNews recently reviewed the coin and said the following:
Apart from the shape the coins are pretty much standard New Zealand Mint fare. Struck in an ounce of silver, coloured on the reverse face and being issued for Niue Island are all hallmarks of this Auckland-based company. The mints excellent acrylic display frames are also present and we're huge fans of these. Movie memorabilia collectors like to display their items far more than coin collectors do, so this is a sensible nod to the intended market, although there's much here for the numismatist to like.
Star Wars movie posters are almost as iconic as the movies themselves and fit into a huge back tapestry of art and design that has built up around these hugely popular movies. Between the characters, settings, vessels and everything else that has made this universe a part of popular culture, there's a huge wellspring of material to choose from. The choice of movie posters for the subject matter is an excellent one, given that their purpose is to encapsulate everything about a movie in a single piece of art.
The item appears to be a must-have for Star Wars enthusiasts and coin collectors alike. Head over to New Zealand Mint to order yours.
