Star Wars: Ben Mendelsohn Says An "Enormously Different" Version Of Rogue One Exists

Earlier this month, the Star Wars universe made a comeback when the franchise's first standalone hit theaters. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story explored part of the original trilogy by following a group of Rebels who were tasked with stealing plans to the Imperial Death Star. The movie has been hit with Star Wars fans around the world, but it seems like the movie almost went in a very different direction. According to Ben Mendelsohn, there are other very different versions of Rogue One sitting on shelves in one of Lucasfilm's studios.

Recently, the actor did an interview with Collider where he talked about playing the Imperial officer Orson Krennic in Rogue One. It was there that Mendelsohn said the team behind the project would shoot scenes multiple ways on-set to give editors different readings.

"We did have multiple, multiple ways of going at any given scenario, we had multiple readings of it. So should they ever decided to, there would be a wealth of ways of approaching these different things. And I know from having seen sort of the crucial kind of scenes throughout it, I know there's vastly different readings of at least four of those scenes," he explained.

When Mendelsohn was asked whether or not there was a completely different version of Rogue One out there, the actor said an alternate cut should exist. "Absolutely," he answered. "with enormous differences within I would've said 20 or 30 of the scenes."

If fans are lucky, they may be made privy to some of these scenes when Rogue One eventually gets released on DVD and Blu-ray. Should that be the case, fans can expect to learn a bit more about Star Wars' extended lore and how Rogue One fits into the overall arc of the Skywalker Saga.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hit US theaters December 16, 2016. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set between the events of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and shortly before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. In the film, resistance fighters embark on a daring mission to steal the Empire's plans for the Death Star.
