Fans will be able to see Colin Trevorrow‘s Star Wars: Episode IX in May 2019 as Lucasfilm adjusts their new release schedule to keep the tradition established in previous films. With Rian Johnson’s take on the franchise set to premiere December 15, production is now gearing up on the followup.

But Trevorrow is a busy man, promoting the release on his next film The Book Of Henry while helping out on the production of Jurassic World 2. He took a moment out of his busy schedule to speak with Fandango about his process for Episode IX and what he hopes to accomplish in the movie.

“Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia were all characters that we were able to identify with in various ways, and especially with the character of Rey and what she means to young girls right now, and the challenges that she’s up against,” Trevorrow said. “It is extremely crucial that I understand what actual children are feeling about these stories that we’re telling them, and I think it’s important that I have kids, and if filmmakers don’t have kids, they should go talk to them because they don’t see things the same way that we did when we were kids. So, yes, I am very dialed in to that because I think it’s a requisite of the job.

He was asked about living up to the legacy of Return of the Jedi and if he’s attempting to make his movie more memorable, but he offered a respectable answer.

“My hope is to make it as richly satisfying as it could possibly be,” Trevorrow said. “I have a lot of support, and a lot of really brilliant thinkers and storytellers around me. Kiri Hart and the Lucasfilm story group, and Michelle Rejwan, and Kathy Kennedy, my producers, and J.J. [Abrams] and Rian [Johnson], and Larry Kasdan, and when you look at this army of brilliant people that we have, it’s not me alone. It’s a whole team.”

Trevorrow is surrounded by an amazing team of talented filmmakers and storytellers, so he is certainly equipped for success. We’ll learn more about his foray in a galaxy far, far away when Star Wars: Episode IX premieres May 24, 2019.
