Breaking! Disney has announced that they have plans to create a new live-action Star Wars television series.

The announcement was made by Disney chairman-CEO Bob Iger, during the company's quarterly earnings call. The series will reportedly air on Disney's new streaming service, which is set to debut in 2019.

In addition to plans to adapt Star Wars to television, Disney also announced plans on television adaptations of Monsters Inc. and High School Musical. They also announced plans to develop some sort of Marvel original series, news that initially broke earlier today.

Star Wars has had a growing impact on the television landscape in the years since the original trilogy, but largely in the realm of animated series. The first two Star Wars television series, Star Wars: Droids and Star Wars: Ewoks aired on ABC in 1985 and 1986. Star Wars then returned to television in 2003 with Star Wars: Clone Wars and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and is currently airing both Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars Forces of Destiny.

Word of a new Star Wars television series has been floating around for quite some time, with rumors largely kicking up late last year. Fans have suggested quite a few possibilities, including a Knights of the Old Republic adaptation.

This also comes with the news that Disney will be developing a new Star Wars film trilogy, with the help of The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson.
