Even before the dawn of Tumblr, fans have been shipping their favorite characters together. It happened in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with some hoping to see Rey and Finn in a relationship while others wanted to see the turncoat Stormtrooper end up with his buddy Poe Dameron.

Now John Boyega weighed in on the debate during the media junket for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, where I asked him who he wanted to see Finn end up with if given the choice.

“None of them. None of them,” Boyega said flatly. “I think he should stay single for now, he hasn’t figured himself out. He’d ruin them if he got into a relationship, so, I think he should just stay cool, man. Stay cool.”

A diplomatic response loaded with insight. Instead of picking sides, the actor knows that his character has a lot of growing up to do before he can focus on romance.

Boyega has previously lent his support to the Finn and Poe shippers, adding fuel to the speculative fires during a conversation about co-star Oscar Isaac with Metro.

“I think that Oscar is always looking at me with love in his eyes, and I guess that the fans saw it. And then they realized that either he needs to chill or come out,” Boyega said.

The actor is also a strong supporter of diversity on the screen and behind the scenes, talking about his own work on another one of his upcoming films.

“There definitely is that responsibility, but more the responsibility to hire those from those experiences to share their creative light, that’s the pivotal thing,” Boyega said. “Because if you just hire the same sort of people you’re just getting the same sort of film. It’s not wrong, but then there’s a lack of variety. I think ‘Pacific Rim [Uprising]’ handles that in a very unique way.”

We’ll see how Finn grows up when Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in theaters on December 15.
