In 1977, George Lucas introduced the world to a now-iconic weapon with the lightsaber, with heroes wielding blue blades and villains wielding red. In the 40 years since, the Star Wars saga has used these base colors to delineate good vs. evil, while also introducing blades of other colors to make the galaxy more vast. In an issue of Parade, Johnson reportedly teases that The Last Jedi will feature Rey wielding a blue saber, Kylo wielding red and potentially a new hue will appear.

It’s unclear if his comments reflect an all-new color of saber not seen in any other iteration of the Star Wars saga or if we’ll see a “new” color not seen in the previous film.
The iconic weapon has been the source of a variety of discussions surrounding the new films, with Johnson’s tease being only the latest.
One point of debate has to do with the saber Rey brings to Ahch-To and hands to Luke and the weapon’s owner. When the weapon first debuted in Star Wars, it was said to have belonged to Anakin before he became Darth Vader. It was then referred to as Luke’s, as he was the new owner, although he eventually lost the weapon in his confrontation with Vader in The Empire Strikes Back.
In The Force Awakens, Rey obtained the saber from Maz Khanata, but as she wasn’t “given” the weapon, fans have debated if the weapon now belongs to her or if she will be returning it to Luke, its “proper” owner.
Of the many arguments supporting the saber officially belonging to Rey, one is that Luke constructed his own saber with a green blade, which he uses throughout Return of the Jedi. It’s possible for a Jedi to wield multiple sabers, but it’s unlikely Luke would wield two different sabers for any reason, possibly entrusting Rey with Anakin’s former saber.
Another question about the upcoming film will be whether or not we’ll get to see Luke wield a saber at all, with some promotional materials showing the Jedi holding his former saber with a blue blade. If that’s the case, we can’t help but wonder if he took his saber with a green blade to the island at all, or forfeited it at some point in order to leave his Jedi life behind.
Many of our lightsaber questions will be answered when The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15.
