The Empire Strikes Back gave audiences one of the biggest surprises in cinema history with the reveal that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker's father, while Return of the Jedi added that Princess Leia was Luke's sister. Yoda, however, wasn't at all surprised, as an excerpt from an upcoming Star Wars book reveals that Yoda not only knew about Leia, but thought that she was the chosen one who would bring balance to the Force.

The upcoming book, Star Wars: From A Certain Point of View, explores 40 previously unknown stories that fill in all sorts of gaps in the Star Wars mythos. In a story entitled "There is Another," readers learn a lot more about Yoda, with the story detailing Obi-Wan's presence visiting the Jedi master on Dagobah to inform him he must train "The Chosen One." Yoda's reaction is that he's excited to train "her," assuming Obi-Wan referred to Leia, not Luke.
The story also features an interesting connection to The Phantom Menace, detailing that Yoda has been using Qui-Gon Jinn's cloak as a blanket after the Jedi was killed by Darth Maul. A tragic element of the story involves Yoda revealing to Obi-Wan that he, too, is ready to cross over to another realm, which Obi-Wan prevents him from doing in order to train Luke.
This revelation brings about a few interesting questions, with the biggest being that maybe Leia really is the Chosen One.
Prior to Luke meeting Obi-Wan, Leia had been very active in the Rebellion, which could have been the reason Yoda connected with her presence more strongly, as opposed to Luke and his life on a farm.
In Return of the Jedi, Luke doesn't necessarily bring balance to the Force, as Anakin intervenes to kill the Emperor while Luke stands by.
Going into The Last Jedi, we know that Luke is on the remote Ahch-To, claiming that the Jedi "must end." Could Leia still play an integral role in bringing balance to the Force in a way Luke can't?
Audiences will next see Leia in The Last Jedi, hitting theaters December 15.
