Last seen being captured by Negan, Eugene Porter‘s fate is up in the air on AMC‘s The Walking Dead. However, with the show following Robert Kirkman’ original comics more closely than ever before, we are able to draw some insight into Eugene’s future from the books.

Be warned, this does mean potential spoilers follow!

In the comics, Eugene ended up captured by Negan but much later down the line. Eugene had already begun crafting bullets for the Alexandria Safe-Zone’s army as they were going to war with Negan and the Saviors. During one of their marches on the Sanctuary, Eugene and a handful of other Alexandrians are caught and taken prisoner by the villain.

While in captivity, Negan reveals to Eugene he is aware of Eugene’s ability to craft bullets. He leaves Eugene little room for choice in manufacturing bullets for the Saviors when he says that he will either press a hot iron against his face or cut off his genitals should he refuse. Eugene, however, refuses, telling Negan he’ll never betray Rick, “no matter how many genitals you sever.” Surprisingly, Negan doesn’t act immediately — knowing Eugene’s value — and allows him more time to consider his options.

By this point, Dwight has revealed himself as an inside man for Rick’s army but no one is quite sure if we can trust him. He did put an arrow through one of our survivors faces, after all.

When Negan isn’t around, Dwight tells Eugene he is going to get him out. To both of their surprise, the Sanctuary’s Dr. Carson reveals himself as plotting to takedown Negan, as well. He hopes to reunite with his brother who has been serving as a doctor at the Hilltop for some time now.

Negan and Dwight head out on a mission to attack the Hilltop which is when Dr. Carson makes his move. Eugene is sitting in his cell and freed. While they escape, Mark and Amber sneak up behind them and want out, too.

Eugene’s heroics are only getting started. On their way back to Alexandria, their van is spotted by a Saviors sniper who immediately opens fire on them. Everyone inside the van panics but Eugene insists they calm down. He crafts a way to make the horn sound and attract a horde of zombies to the van before sneaking up on the sniper and pushing him from his perch to his death upon impact on the ground. Eugene helps the group get back to Alexandria safely.

This all rounds out Eugene’s story for the All Out War storyline which saw Rick rally Alexandria, the Kingdom, and the Hilltop to victory over Negan and the Saviors. From here, Eugene becomes a part of the Alexandria Herd Patrol and eventually, much later down the line, fixes an old radio and finds someone to communicate with who claims to be in Ohio. Of course, along the way, he did cook up a little romantic relationship with Rosita but that was cut short by the Whisperers.

Whether or not The Walking Dead TV series will follow these beats from the comics are to be seen but, so far, it looks like Eugene is going to be forced to manufacture bullets for Negan. Let’s hope he doesn’t bend to the villains will and comes out of the Sanctuary unscathed!
