By the end of its current season, Doctor Who will leave fans mourning when the 13th Doctor exits the show. Peter Capaldi will be leaving the cult sci-fi classic after a brief romp as a Time Lord, and BBC is already looking for another star to take the actor’s place. As of late, rumors have swirled that the BBC is opening up its talent search to women as fans have begged the network to finally bring in a female Doctor. For some time, audiences have even fan-casted Hayley Atwell into the role, but no one should get their hopes up about that happening. After all, the actress did just tell fans at a convention that she’s not interested in the role.

Over in London, Atwell appeared at Heroes and Villains Fanfest, and it was there the actress opened up about potentially regenerating into the 14th Doctor. As you can read below, the actress doesn’t appear keen on become the first leading lady on the BBC series.

“I don’t want to play it,” Atwell said after being asked about playing the Doctor.

“No. It’s just not my thing, but I really respect it. I’m a big fan of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, though. She plays the lead in Fleabag. There were talks of her being the next Doctor, and she’s so funny and eccentric and unique; she’d be great. I can’t really see anyone other than her playing it.”

In the past, Atwell has teased fans about her interest in Doctor Who, but it looks like the actress has had a change of heart. Still, there are plenty of others actresses who would love to play the Doctor. Netizens have fan-casted everyone from Tilda Swinton to Olivia Coleman in the coveted role. But, when it comes down to it, reports stress that the BBC will most likely cast another male actor for the leading role.

Earlier this year, reports surfaced which suggested that Kris Marshall is the first choice to play the 14th Doctor. The BBC has declined to confirm which actors have been approached for the role, but the ginger-headed actor has been a staple on numerous shortlists to-date.
