“Laughs! Thrills! Chills! Adventure! Friendship! Terror!” said Griffin Newman, who plays Arthur Everest.
Jackie Earle Haley added a “SPOON!” for good measure.
“I always describe the show to people as like a romantic comedy between the Tick and I,” Newman said. “I think it is the two of us learning to love each other in all but the physical sense.”
Peter Serafinowicz, who plays the titular Tick, spoke about the optimism in the show.
“It’s got a lot of heart,” Serafinowicz said. “It does things that haven’t been fashionable, it’s got a sweetness about it. Also, the Tick, my character, has got a superheroness that is so pure and old fashioned that seems to not be in vogue that much anymore. A bit like how Christopher Reeve’s Superman was or Adam West’s Batman. It’s got a straightforwardness to it.”
“It’s also this very absurd comedy with these crazy ideas but with real characters that you can invest in emotionally,” Newman said. “So it’s like, what if Airplane was funny but you also cared about the people? What if you were worried every time Frank Drebin went into action in Naked Gun? That’s what we’re kind of trying to do, that’s our goal.”
Serafinowicz reiterated how big a fan he is of the show, and Haley affirmed the notion.
“It’s definitely a parody, a comic book parody,” Haley added. “But it’s really grounded. And I think Arthur and Dot [Valorie Curry] really help ground it. They’re the most real. It’s not to say there’s a lot of funny stuff still going on. My character is just evil incarnate, periodโฆ We’re trying to own everything and play everything in such a way that I think we really earn the laughs and the grounding earns the ability for the Tick to be super funny and super ridiculous, but like he said he also has this heart. He’s the epitome of the perfect superhero. He doesn’t have this dark backstory that he’s dealing with. He’s actually trying to figure out who the heck he is. And all of his intentions are always the right, perfect intentions. And he’s helping Arthur figure out who he is, and Arthur’s helping him figure out who he is.”
It sounds like the show is going to accurately capture the spirit and tone of the comic books, which have been a cult favorite and spawned two previous TV series.
We’ll find out for ourselves when The Tick debuts on Amazon Prime on August 25.
