Riverdale star KJ Apa was treated and released by first responders in the early morning hours earlier this week after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing his car.

Apa was reportedly coming off a 16-hour shoot and dozed off while driving himself the 45 minutes back to downtown Vancouver from the set of the series.

“They’re working these kids from morning until night,” a source told The Hollywood Reporter. “Someone’s going to die.”

Apa was treated and released without serious injury, but the car is reportedly a total loss.

Warner Bros. does not currenty provide transportation to and from the set to members of the cast. This has been a topic of some conversation and consternation in the past, but Apa’s crash has reportedly thrown it into sharper relief. THR says Cole Sprouse, a former child star and so one of the only veteran actors among the young cast, is appealing directly to executive producer Greg Berlanti to help them figure out a better transportation situation.

Warner Bros. Television has made no official statement regarding the accident.

A source reportedly told THR that in some circumstances, the studio offers to pay for taxicab services or a local hotel.

Balancing the safety of performers with the demands of production schedules has been a hot-button issue since camera assistant Sarah Jones was killed by a train on the set of the film Midnight Rider in 2014. Seven others were injured in that event.

More recently, the deaths of a pair of stunt performers — one for The Walking Dead and one for Deadpool 2 — have brought the conversation back to the headlines.

The news comes just as Riverdale was back in the headlines in the run-up to next month’s second season: yesterday, The CW announced that they were developing The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a horror-drama based on the Archie Comics character Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Production on Riverdale will reportedly resume as scheduled today.

Riverdale returns on Wednesday, October 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

This story previously indicated that Apa had been treated at an area hospital, which has since been disputed.
