Buffy the Vampire Slayer is finally set to return with its original slayer in tow, and it has quite the talented team at the helm. Heralded director Chloe Zhao and her production company are developing the revival, and it will feature the return of Sarah Michelle Gellar in the role of Buffy Summers as well, so to say anticipation is high would be an understatement. The good news is that we now have a very positive update on the series, which looks closer and closer to becoming a reality.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Zhao was asked what she was doing next, and that’s when she revealed that the first part of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series is now complete. Zhao said, “I just wrapped the pilot on the new ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ series, which is set 25 years later. My company is part of developing it. The fandom is so special to me and Iโm excited about how thatโs going to go into the world.”
Moving in the Right Direction
There’s no shortage of projects that garner a lot of attention right off the bat but never find their footing, either fading away into the ether or being outright cancelled. That’s especially true of beloved IP, but it seems Buffy the Vampire Slayer is not only moving in the right direction but is also poised to hit TV screens in the next year or so if the pilot is already finished.
We’re still not sure of everyone who will be involved in the project, but we have received quite a few casting updates as of late. In addition to Gellar reprising the role of Buffy, the series will also feature a new slayer character by the name of Nova, who will be played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Other casting additions include Merrin Dungey, Jack Cutmore Scott, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel di Tomasso, Audrey Grace Marshall, Jensen Gering, Daly Rakotohavana, Kingston Vernes, Audrey Hsieh, and Winston Vegapally.
What Can Fans Expect from the Revival?
Gellar has provided some insight into the new series and what fans can expect, mostly in regards to the show’s tone and its approach to original characters. At a recent festival, Gellar said, โIt will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original. We will try to find a balance between new and old characters.โ
Speaking of old characters, Gellar also teased that some characters are likely to return, saying, โMy dream is to bring back everyone who has died, but space will have to be made for new stories as well.โ
โOne of the surprising aspects of Buffy is that itโs always been a crossover series,โ Gellar said. โWeโre trying to figure out how to modernize the themes of the series, especially what it means to feel like an outsider in a world dominated by social media. What we want to explore are the space-time boundaries that affect society today.โ
You can catch up on the entire Buffy the Vampire Slayer saga right now on Hulu. As for the new series, it doesn’t currently have a release date.
