David Corenswet’s Superman Now Seems Very Likely to Return to the DCU in the Next Month

The DC Universe is already on a hot streak. After dipping its toes in the water with Creature Commandos, the franchise is taking the gloves off with its most significant character, Superman. James Gunn’s 2025 film is one of the biggest success stories of the year, bringing in a major haul at the box office and finding success after landing on PVOD. The Man of Steel is so back that a follow-up to Superman is already in the works, titled Man of Tomorrow. Gunn is taking every opportunity he can to explain that the sequel isn’t just about Superman but also Lex Luthor, who will team up with his greatest rival to face a new threat.

Having to share the spotlight seems like a demotion for Superman, but that’s not what Gunn is aiming for. Following the success of his solo movie, David Corenswet’s hero is going to take a back seat to allow other characters to shine. However, he’s going to be around more than ever, as the stars appear to be aligning for him to show up again in the DCU in a matter of weeks.

The Timing of Superman‘s Release on HBO Max May Not Be an Accident

In the streaming era, a movie can’t be called a success until its streaming numbers come in. After all, many people would rather wait to watch something at home than pay a decent chunk of change to visit their local theater. Superman will get its shot at streaming glory on September 19th, when it releases on Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO Max. Dropping on the platform a few weeks after releasing on PVOD may not seem significant, but Gunn and his team over at DC Studios aren’t taking any chances these days. They want their audience to have all the resources necessary to stay up to date, and watching Superman may be important here soon because another DCU project is about to enter interesting territory.

HBO Max is currently airing the second season of Peacemaker, which follows Christopher Smith and his group of friends as they try to navigate life after stopping an alien invasion. Things aren’t going the titular anti-hero’s way, so he’s flirting with the idea of staying in an alternate reality he stumbled upon for good. The final three episodes of Season 2 will dive fully into that storyline, and it just so happens that Episode 6 drops only a few days after Superman‘s HBO Max debut. That doesn’t mean Peacemaker is penciling in a real appearance from the Man of Steel, but it would make a lot of sense.

Superman Fits in With What Peacemaker Is Going for in Season 2

The big mystery in Peacemaker Season 2 is what’s really going on in the other universe. It seems to be tailored for Chris, who is able to reunite with his dead father and brother and be with Emilia Harcourt. The prevailing theory is that Peacemaker is roaming around a world where the Nazis won World War II, allowing his racist father to rise to the top of the superhero food chain. If that does end up being the case, there wouldn’t be any problem bringing Superman into the fold. Krypton still would have been destroyed, leading to Kal-El’s ship crashing on Earth. However, instead of being found by the loving Kents, he may have been found by twisted versions of his parents, who are driven by the need to keep the world pure.

DC Comics already tackled a similar idea with Superman: Red Son, which saw the Kryptonian be raised in the Soviet Union. Gunn could take some creative liberties with the story and introduce a Nazi version of Superman, or he might have the original Superman catch wind of what’s going on in the Quantum Unfolding Chamber. Either way, with Superman dropping on HBO Max around the same time that Peacemaker really kicks its story into gear, it feels like only a matter of time before Big Blue gets a chance to make up for his tardiness to the battle with the Butterflies.
