One classic Disney Afternoon animated series is now in the works on a new reboot, and the star behind it all is teasing that the characters will be aged up for the new era. The Disney Afternoon block is still one of the most memorable programming blocks for Disney fans even after all these years. First beginning in 1990, the block introduced many animation fans to TV shows that have since become pillars of Disney programming all these years later. Many of which have returned with special reboots and revivals in the years since that initial premiere too. And there’s one that’s still on the way.

The status of the previously announced Darkwing Duck reboot has been largely a mystery since it was revealed to be in its early stages many years ago, but voice star Jim Cummings has offered a surprising update on the new project in a recent interview with thehijabibounder on TikTok where the star not only revealed that it’s going to feature older versions of the main characters, but likens it to Batman in a surprising way too.
Darkwing Duck Star Teases Older Characters for New Reboot

“Darkwing Duck is coming back, so that’s going to be very interesting,” Cummings began. “That is one that’s very near and dear to my heart, and I’m so honored that after 30 years he’s coming back. I don’t want to spoil anything, but Gosalyn has grown up and he’s actually gotten older. I liken it to what they did with Batman. Batman took 30 years off in one of the Batman series, and things just got so he had to come back. That’s where Darkwing lands, same thing. Stay tuned.” This tease has quite a lot packed into it that could set up an interesting future for the franchise.
According to Cummings, the new Darkwing Duck is set sometime in the future from the original events of the series and features an older version of Drake Mallard and his adopted daughter Gosalyn. It seems Cummings is also drawing parallels to series like The Dark Knight Returns which saw an older version of Bruce Wayne needing to fight crime once more, or maybe even shows like Batman Beyond that took place years in the future from the animated series. Either way, it seems to have a darker tone for its older characters planned in some fashion.
Is Darkwing Duck Getting a Reboot?

Cummings has unfortunately been the only one to share updates on the Darkwing Duck reboot since it was announced. When it was first revealed, very few details were concrete at the time either. Reported to be in development for Disney+, there was no writer attached to the project at the time, but it would feature Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Alex AcAtee executive producing for Point Grey Pictures with AcAtee overseeing the project as a whole. It’s gone dark since that initial report, however.
Cummings update teases that the Darkwing Duck reboot has been in development enough to the point where it seemed to have locked down a concept as well as older designs for the characters, but at the same time there have been reports that the reboot has outright died in production. It’s yet to be properly revealed one way or the other, so until then you can catch the classic Darkwing Duck series streaming with Disney+ in the meantime.
