Wanda Maximoff’s Scarlet Witch will soon be coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but we wish Elizabeth Olsen’s return wasn’t continuing a disappointing trend for the beloved character. Olsen first appeared as Wanda Maximoff in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and in the decade since, she has gone on to be a formidable member of the Avengers and one of Marvel Studios’ most powerful beings. She has been absent from the MCU for three years now, but the next upcoming Marvel Studios project will finally be bringing the Scarlet Witch back.

The new trailer for Marvel Studios Animation’s upcoming Marvel Zombies series features the Scarlet Witch’s return to the MCU after three years. Olsen was confirmed to be lending her voice to the zombified version of Wanda Maximoff last year ahead of the four-part series’ release on September 24, 2025. While Wanda Maximoff’s return three years after her death in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is very exciting, she’ll be coming back as yet another formidable villain – but we want to see the heroic Scarlet Witch again.
Marvel Zombies will expand on the alternate reality first seen in What If…? season 1, episode 5, “What If… Zombies?!,” which saw Janet van Dyne return from the Quantum Realm and bring a quantum virus with her, leading to the zombie apocalypse. In What If…?, the zombified Scarlet Witch posed the most significant threat to the heroes trying to acquire the Mind Stone. Since zombies retain their superpowers even when reanimated, and the Scarlet Witch is perhaps the MCU’s most powerful character, her zombified form presents a massive danger.
There were hopes that the Scarlet Witch would make her next MCU appearance as a bona fide hero, or perhaps one seeking redemption. Her villainous turn in 2021’s WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was controversial, even though it perhaps made sense given her immense grief and trauma. Of course, the version of the character seen in Marvel Zombies is a variant of Elizabeth Olsen’s live-action iteration from Earth 616, and her scenes in Marvel Zombies’ trailer look incredible and energetic, but it’s a shame the Scarlet Witch hasn’t yet had redemption.
Speculation suggests Elizabeth Olsen will return to the role of Wanda Maximoff in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, but this hasn’t yet been confirmed. If this happens, we hope she comes back as a bona fide hero, and doesn’t continue her downward spiral into villainy. Olsen joins an impressive MCU voice cast in Marvel Zombies, including Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Awkwafina, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Hailee Steinfeld, Iman Vellani, Hudson Thames, and many more. Hopefully she joins the strong cast of the Russo brothers’ upcoming MCU crossover events next.
