John Cena Explains Viral Photo With Superman Star David Corenswet

Superman and Peacemaker work as standalone stories, but since both projects are part of the DC Universe, there are connections between the two. Numerous Superman characters have appeared on Peacemaker Season 2, including the Man of Steel himself. Kal-El’s silhouette was seen in Peacemaker‘s controversial Justice Gang retcon, but some fans are convinced he will have a bigger role to play during the homestretch of Season 2. Earlier this month, a photo of Peacemaker star John Cena posing with Superman star David Corenswet in costume went viral, fueling speculation about a crossover. Now, Cena shares the story behind the image.

In an interview with GQ, Cena was asked about the picture he took with Corenswet. “I can tell you the story behind David and I, and that photo where I’m dressed as Peacemaker, is I knew that they were finishing up filming Superman and I desperately wanted to meet David,” he said. “I wanted to meet the new Superman and just lend my services, like, ‘Hey, man, your life is about to change and I’ve heard that you’ve been doing an incredible job. I want to thank you because if you suck, that means DC sucks, which means we got a bigger hole to dig out of. So thank you so much for giving this your all. As someone who has been far more exposed to the media than I have formal acting training, if I can help you in any way, please, here’s my number, let me know.’”

Is There More to John Cena’s Peacemaker & Superman Photo Story?

Actors are known for giving coy responses about major franchise projects, so some fans are going to suspect Cena is hiding something that he’s not at the liberty to share. It’s notable that in the photo with Corenswet, Cena is wearing his wardrobe from the last few Peacemaker episodes, causing viewers to believe he was filming scenes with Corenswet. Gunn purposely withheld the final three episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 from the press for review purposes due to all the surprises and revelations they contain. Few things would be bigger than seeing Corenswet return in Peacemaker.

But if we take Cena’s response at face value, it still makes sense. Peacemaker Season 2 and Superman were filming at the same time last year, and given Gunn’s significant involvement with both projects, it stands reason to believe he was balancing his time between both sets. When speaking with Gunn, Cena could have learned that Superman was about to wrap and asked if he could stop by to see Corenswet. As a veteran of the entertainment industry, Cena knew what was in store for the then relatively unknown Corenswet, so it’s nice to see him take the time to reach out and share valuable advice.

The one detail about the photo that makes people believe it’s something more than just a friendly visit to offer Corenswet words of encouragement is the fact that both actors are in their respective costumes. If Cena was just stopping by to say hello to Corenswet, why would he be in full Peacemaker garb as opposed to his normal clothes? Perhaps the simplest explanation is that Peacemaker and Superman were shooting scenes on the same day and Cena had to rush over to the Superman set before Corenswet wrapped. He either didn’t have time to change out of his costume or just took a quick break while shooting Peacemaker.

That might be too straightforward for some fans to buy as the full truth โ€” especially since Peacemaker Season 2 has been described as the “direct follow-up” to Superman. With investigations into dimensional rifts and the potential for multiverse shenanigans happening in the remaining three episodes, the situation seems like something that would call for Superman’s attention. After dealing with Lex Luthor’s rifts that almost destroyed the planet, Kal-El wouldn’t just ignore something similar taking place. It’s also possible Corenswet could have a cameo as the Superman variant in Peacemaker‘s alternate dimension. If the theory is true and that parallel universe is the DCU’s version of Earth-X, it could be fun to see Corenswet bring a very different version of Superman to life.
