The world of Riverdale got even bigger with tonight's episode, and it dropped in a pretty vintage Archie Comics Easter egg along the way.

Spoilers for tonight's episode of Riverdale, 'Chapter Sixteen: The Watcher In The Woods' below.

Tonight, Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) started his new tenure at Southside High. He was introduced to the ecosystem of the school - including the war between the Serpents and another gang, the Goolies.

While that name might not register with some viewers, it actually references an old part of the Archie universe - the Groovie Goolies. The animated series debuted in 1970s, as a spinoff of The Sabrina the Teenage Witch Show (which, in its own way, was a spinoff of The Archie Show).

The Groovie Goolies followed a rotating cast of Universal Monsters-inspired characters that lived in a boarding house named Horrible Hall. The main cast of characters - aside from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, who appeared with the group a lot - were Drac, Frankie, Wolfie, and Hagatha the witch. Each of the sixteen episodes featured short comedy sketches, as well as musical performance from some delightfully punny band names.

Now that Riverdale has entered it's second season, these references to the Archie cartoons are becoming more common. Last week's episode saw the introduction of Jingle Jangle, a drug that shares the same name as an Archies song.

As of now, the Goolies seem to have an ominous presence on Riverdale, primarily beating Jughead up when he stays at the school late. But as the series goes on, fans will hopefully get to see more about the group (and possibly have characters with those delightful monster nicknames).

And who knows, now that Sabrina is officially set to enter the world of Riverdale, this might not be the last place that viewers see the Goolies.

Riverdale airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on The CW.
