South Park’s Big Change to Satan Can Fix This Season

South Park Season 27 has been a tough watch thus far with lots of little issues bringing it down overall, but its major change to Satan revealed in the latest episode could be what helps to fix the season before it ends. It was no secret that South Park came into the fray with a huge premiere this year. Season 27 was the first proper season of the series in some time, and the premiere ended up being one of the most watched episodes of the animated series in its history. So on the outside, it might not seem like there’s any real trouble.

But after many specials telling longer stories, and season long arcs seen in the past, South Park Season 27 has yet to craft a longer narrative through the episodes thus far. There have been some hints at a larger idea as Satan and President Donald Trump have formed a relationship much like seen with Satan in South Park’s earliest seasons, but the newest episode offers a big development that’s likely leading to a much bigger payoff. By revealing Satan is now pregnant, South Park Season 27’s grander story is taking shape.

What’s Going on With South Park Season 27?

Lapsed South Park fans might not see this as that big of a deal, but creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone put a lot of effort into their longer seasonal narratives than fans ever could have expected. While they certainly still develop new episodes of the animated series a week before they air (even with this season’s new biweekly release schedule), the creators have been testing out longer serialized elements with notable changes to the status quo over the last few years especially. Each episode might be its own wacky adventure, but they still have an impact on episodes that will come later.

Parker and Stone will likely be the first to debunk any kind of long running “canon” that adult animation fans love to see in shows these days, and have even noted just this season how they didn’t know what they were going to do after the season premiere, but South Park still has those elements tying the episodes together. Funny enough, it’s also what has helped the franchise’s longevity overall. That freedom to experiment with status quo changes, but the focus on something completely different the next week (while keeping previous changes intact) is what has made South Park even more special lately.

South Park Season 27 has even reflected this as there was already a major shift with Randy and the Marsh Family leaving Tegridy Farms seven years after it was first introduced to the franchise. That was a piece of status quo that many fans seemed to grow tired with, and the creators decided to make that change this season. It’s yet to be revealed what’s next for Randy, Stan and the rest of the family from now on, but it’s one of those kinds of developments that could continue to take shape through the rest of the season and beyond.

Why This Satan Change Is So Important

The first three episodes of South Park Season 27 have felt largely disconnected from one another despite the Trump jokes tying them all together. They have focused on how changes in the school and the outside world are leading to shifts with each of the characters in the aftermath, but the wider scope of the new season’s overall story was not yet clear. It could be because Parker and Stone themselves have yet to put it together, however, but that’s now changing with Satan’s pregnancy.

Satan returning to South Park was already a huge deal (as we has previously killed off in Season 22, and even went to Heaven), but things were taken to the next level with the nostalgic callback to his infamous relationship with Saddam Hussain. He had been teasing there was a reason he (and Towelie) could not escape from the White House, and reveals in “Wok Is Dead” that he’s actually pregnant. But the bigger tease is the mysterious “showdown” that Satan had been alluding to before.

This likely wasn’t the moment between Satan and Jesus seen towards the episode’s end, but will likely take place following the birth of those babies. Now that this major plot point has been dropped, it gives the rest of the season a proper framework to follow. Even better if, after an entire season of largely keeping them out of focus or separated, Stan and the other boys are the only ones who can stop whatever is happening leading into the season finale. This season’s also been largely missing out on its lack of the core four interacting with one another so far, so that’s two birds with one stone in that regard.
