The Boys’ Version of X-Men’s Beast Is Completely Different in Live-Action (& Better For It)

The X-Men movies always feel like they’re holding back. It all starts with the costumes, with the titular team donning all-black leather outfits instead of their color outfits from the comic books. Cyclops even makes a joke about “yellow spandex” in the first X-Men movie, which shows just how little the franchise cares about doing justice to the source material. But it’s not all about appearance, as Fox’s movies refuse to dive into wackier territory to maintain a level of realism. Well, the barriers are being broken down for mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and there’s one character who’s benefiting more than most.

During Beast’s brief appearance in The Marvels‘ post-credits scene, the character is more like his comic book counterpart than ever before, appearing much larger in stature and using his big brain for good. Another major aspect of Hank McCoy has yet to make the leap to live-action, but The Boys‘ spinoff, Gen V, has the MCU covered, giving its version of Beast every opportunity to show off what they’re made of.

Dogknott Uses His Heightened Senses to Hunt Down Marie Moreau

The first episode of Gen V Season 2 is about the search for Marie Moreau. The new dean at Godolkin University, Cipher, wants her back, so he sends Vought’s top tracker, Dognott, after her. The Supe’s calling card is that he can track people via their smell, and it doesn’t take him long to get a hit on Marie. After visiting a convenience store where she shopped the day before and creeping out the clerk, Dogknott finds Marie at her motel and gets the drop on her. He might not be blue, but he still packs a punch like Beast, throwing Marie around with ease.

The only reason that Dogknott is unable to complete his mission is that Starlight arrives on the scene and makes quick work of the Vought lackey. In that moment, it’s clear that Dogknott isn’t on the same playing field as Beast in the intelligence department. He likes to shoot first and ask questions later, which isn’t the X-Man’s style. Fortunately, Dogknott does the rest of his job effectively and proves that there’s room for even the strangest of powers in live-action.

The MCU Can Take Cues From Gen V‘s Dogknott

Beast in The Marvels post-credits scene.

One of the standout moments of Dogknott’s fight in the motel room is when he gets on all fours and lunges at his target. His animal instincts take over, and he’s willing to do anything to win. Although Dogknott doesn’t win and must rectify his mistake by killing innocent people, he lays the groundwork for the MCU to ensure Beast reaches his full potential on the big screen. It all starts with Avengers: Doomsday, which will see Kelsey Grammer reprise his role and fight alongside the rest of the X-Men. Grammar may not be a spring chicken, but he’s going to be in a motion-capture suit, opening up a world of possibilities. Beast can embrace his wild side, get on all fours, and show Doctor Doom what happens when he messes with the X-Men.

Beast is also likely to be part of the MCU’s X-Men reboot, as he’s one of the team’s original members in the comics. If the MCU doesn’t want to give all the good material to Grammer, it can wait until it’s time to introduce the next generation to follow in Dogknott’s footsteps. Either way, the days of Beast keeping his blue side under wraps are over, and he has a pretty strange character to thank for that.

Gen V Season 2 is streaming on Prime Video.
