Wednesday’s Powers Make Even Less Sense After Season 2’s Big Mystery

Netflix has been making big waves by bringing the Addams Family back to the forefront, and fans are loving it. Wednesday takes a unique spin on the family, choosing to largely focus on their daughter, the titular character. While the rest of the family has appeared for antics here and there, it’s Wednesday’s obsession with murder mysteries that drives the story. This has been true for both seasons thus far, and the formula works. The first season of Wednesday revealed that the young character had finally come into her powers—a family tradition. Season 2 really doubled down on this and the familial connections it fosters. Unfortunately, the more we learn about these powers, the more questions we have.

In Season 1, Wednesday Addams immediately grabbed onto her visions, using them as a means to gain the answers she so desperately sought. It’s a very Wednesday solution, to grab something with both hands and force it into behaving. However, Season 2 Part 1 highlighted how that method may have been a mistake, as Wednesday’s powers are striking back, causing black tears and other problems. It seems like, to understand her power struggles, Wednesday will have to look to her family, and that’s where we’re left scratching our heads.

Family Dynamics

The more Wednesday learns about her powers, the more clearly tied they are to the Addams Family line. These psychic abilities go all the way back to Goody Addams, an integral character from Season 1. Despite this, Morticia Addams has proven herself to be an expert on the subject. After all, she is a psychic. Notably, she cannot teach her daughter directly, as their powers come from different sources. In Morticia’s words, she is a Dove while Wednesday is a Raven.

If you’ve been paying attention to the family dynamics, you may be wondering how Morticia is an expert on Addams Family powers, not to mention how her ability fits so seamlessly into the lineage. After all, Morticia is an Addams through marriage. Translation: Morticia shouldn’t have a direct tie to the Addams Family powers, yet she seemingly does.

The Mystery of Ophelia

Season 2 intentionally raised a lot of questions, including a few that hit close to home. Namely, what happened to Morticia’s sister, Ophelia? During one heart-to-heart, Morticia lets it slip that her missing sister was also a Raven, and thus would have made the perfect teacher for Wednesday.

In other words, Season 2 is already doubling down on this confusing family point. To be fair, the Addams Family is probably not the type to shy away from kissing cousins. However, they also seem like the sort of family that would openly talk about these sorts of things. Even if they weren’t, Grandmama’s vicious nature toward Morticia would seemingly predispose her to making a few snide comments, especially while Wednesday is in earshot.

There’s a chance that Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 will help clear up these questions and concerns. Or it could leave us even more confused, only time will tell! Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 will release on Netflix on Wednesday, September 3.
