Few superstars have left as sizable an impact on the modern age of wrestling as John Cena, and fans will have a few more times to see him in action before his in-ring career comes to an end. The John Cena WWE Farewell tour has had its share of ups and downs, and there was still one major question mark regarding his actual final match and where and when it would take place. WWE has finally answered some of those questions, though there is still one major question left to answer.

WWE has announced that John Cena’s final match will take place on Saturday, December 13th as part of Saturday Night’s Main Event, and it will happen live at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. This Saturday Night’s Main Event will differ a bit from past versions, as instead of airing on NBC, it will stream live in primetime on Peacock.
A Once in a Lifetime Event

โJohnโs contributions to WWE are immeasurable. There are no words that can truly relay how much he means to this business,โ said WWE Chief Content Officer Paul โTriple Hโ Levesque. โTogether with our partners at Events DC and Capital One Arena, we look forward to honoring his legacy and delivering an unforgettable send-off for both John and the WWE Universe.โ
โWashington, D.C. is the Sports Capital and the perfect place to honor John Cenaโs remarkable legacy,โ said Angie M. Gates, President and CEO of Events DC. โWe are excited to welcome WWE fans from our city and around the globe to witness an unforgettable final showdown in our nationโs capital. We deeply value our partnership with WWE and look forward to providing fans with an experience they will cherish forever.”
โIt is our great privilege to host John Cenaโs historic final match at Capital One Arena, a staple venue that has consistently witnessed dozens of marquee WWE events over the years,โ said Jordan Silberman, President, Venues at Monumental Sports & Entertainment. โThere’s no stage more fitting to celebrate the legacy of a true entertainment icon than our building, with a backdrop anchored in the heart of Downtown D.C.”
WWE will build around Cena’s final match with a host of other smaller events and appearances, including community-driven initiatives and fan experiences. Cena will also appear on a special live episode of Six Feet Under with The Undertaker, which will take place at The Howard Theatre on Friday, December 12th.
Who Should Cena’s Opponent Be?

Now that we know when Cena’s final match will take place, the biggest question remaining is who he will face in that final showdown. There are a number of ways that could go, but there are 3 options that stand out.
The first is Brock Lesnar, but the only way this one would work is if Lesnar actually loses the match to put Cena over on his way out the door, and that seems incredibly unlikely. Recent reports have suggested that Lesnar will return at the Royal Rumble and will be positioned as a monster force to build to someone else eventually taking him down, so having that be Cena doesn’t really click with that notion. If he’s just going to get another beatdown, there’s no point, and that would be another disappointing chapter in Cena’s final run.
The second option is The Rock, as it could be a way to resolve their previous alliance and end with Cena taking down Rocky for a feel-good moment to end his WWE run. Like Lesnar though, this one seems unlikely, though it’s not all due to storyline reasons. The Rock is in the midst of a movie run at the moment and seems focused on that aspect of his career, and his recent appearances don’t suggest he’s bulking up for a return to the ring either.
The third and more exciting option would be another rematch, but this one would be against CM Punk. One of the brightest spots in Cena’s short-lived heel era was his feud with Punk, both in terms of what they did in the ring and their battles on the microphone. If we actually got the genuine Cena against Punk to close out his run, that would be a top-tier way to close out this chapter of his career, and putting Punk over on the way out the door wouldn’t seem as bad either if they chose to go that route.
It will be interesting to see who Cena ends up facing in his final match, but regardless of who it ends up being, we will certainly be tuning in.
