The 43-year old Edge retired in 2011 after complications with a neck injury and is never expected to follow the line of former superstars to get back into the ring, but this will present another opportunity to perform on the mic with his soapbox opera.
Cutting Edge was originally used as a way to keep Edge relevant as he recovered from a torn pectoral muscle. It evolved into a way to taunt Ric Flair into a match upon his return to the ring. The platform ultimately worked — except that Flair defeated Edge to retain the title — but the segment became popular among fans and has been resurected in mutliple incantations.
Since leaving the WWE, Edge has made multiple return appearances as the R-Rated Superstar so being with SmackDown LIVE is nothing new.
Edge returned for the September 9, 2013 episode of Raw in his hometown of Toronto where he hosted The Cutting Edge with Daniel Bryan as his special guest. He then brought in his former tagteam partner Christian to host the December 29, 2014 episode of Raw, where they held the first ever Cutting Edge Peep Show by interviewing Seth Rollins. The segment ended with Rollins and Big Show attacking them; Rollins holding Edge hostage, and forcing John Cena to intervene.
In lesser appearances, Edge has made a backstage appearances with Seth Rollins, The New Day, and The Dudley Boyz.
During his time in the ring, Edge was one of the most decorated wrestlers of all-time. He won 31 championships in the WWE overall, including 14 tag team championships, 11 world championships, five Intercontinental Championships, and one United States Championship.
Outside of the ring he went to play roles in multiple television shows, Edge played Atom-Smasher on the second season premiere of The Flash and will play Ketill Flatnose on Season 5 of the Vikings in a recurring role.
The 900th episode of SmackDown LIVE airs Nov. 15 at 8/7pm on USA Network.
