It’s a shocking new look for a belt, which will be awarded later tonight by the winner of Finn Balor versus Seth Rollins. Both former NXT stars, this is the first time they’ve fought in the ring, after Rollins was drafted as the first pick in the WWE Draft that split the brands, and Balor was a top five overall pick, being brought up to the main roster from the developmental brand NXT.
The title belt’s reveal drew mixed reactions from fans on twitter, drawing comparisons to “fruit by the foot” and derision for essentially being the World Title – but in red.
Interestingly, this is the second professional wrestling title called the “Universal Championship” – the first debuted in 1983 at the WWC, a Puerto Rican pro wrestling league, and was first held by Carlos Colon.
