Jeremy Renner Reacts To Idea Of A Hawkeye Netflix Series

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has spawned many great characters that fans have latched onto, including a few that tend to be relegated to supporting roles in the films of other heroes.

The most notable character to play that role is Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson, and fans have been campaigning for Marvel to give her a solo film for years.

But what about Widow's SHIELD partner, Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner? With the Avengers movies going more in the cosmic direction with Avengers: Infinity War, wouldn't Hawkeye be more at home among the Marvel's street-level heroes on Netflix?

IGN brought this question to Renner himself, who is promoting his latest film, Arrival. Renner wasn't sure about how the logistics of the idea of a Hawkeye series on Netflix would work out but seemed open to the idea of going deeper into any character he plays.

"I don't know the practicality of that, but I always love, any of these characters that I play, I love to dig into them more," Renner said. "I never feel like I get enough time with any of the characters I play, and that's one of them."

The idea of a high-level SHIELD agent in the same corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Defenders may seem a bit tonally off to fans, but there's precedent for a street-level Hawkeye within the Marvel Comics Universe. The 2012 Hawkeye series saw Hawkeye take up the defense of an apartment building against mostly street-level thugs. The recently debuted Occupy Avengers has Hawkeye traveling across the country to solve problems that may otherwise fly under the radar of the Avengers team.

In Arrival, Linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) leads an elite team of investigators when humongous spaceships touch down in 12 locations around the world. As nations teeter on the verge of global war, Banks and her crew must race against time to find a way to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors. Hoping to unravel the mystery, she takes a chance that could threaten her life and quite possibly all of mankind.

Arrival is directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Eric Heisserer, based on the short story "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang. Arrival stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg and Tzi Ma.

Arrival opens in theaters on Nov. 11, 2016.

Renner is expected to make his next Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance in Avengers: Infinity War, opening May 4, 2016.
