The Red Turtle, Studio Ghibli and The Wild Bunch's new film nominated for Oscar

Studio Ghibli earned yet another Oscar nomination.

This year the film presented and co-produced with The Wild Bunch -- The Red Turtle, the movie directed by the Dutch animator Michael Dudok de Wit, and produced by Studio Ghibli -- will be running for the Animated Feature Film category of the 89th Academy Awards.

It will be competing against Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, My Life as a Courgette, and Zootopia. Surprisingly Makoto Shinkai's your name., which has been received critical acclaim and recently became the highest-grossing anime film worldwide.

The Red Turtle is created by award-winning Dutch animator and director Michael Dudok de Wit's most recent work. This is the third Academy Award nomination for Michael Dudok de Wit. He was previously nominated for his other work, The Monk and the Fish, and Father & Daughter animated shorts. Studio Ghibli co-produced the film with the French film production and distribution company Wild Bunch. The Wild Bunch is the international seller and distributor of Studio Ghibli's work. The film is summarized by the Academy Awards as the following,

"A sailor stranded on a deserted island builds a series of rafts as he attempts to return home, but each voyage is thwarted by a giant sea turtle with a red shell. After the turtle mysteriously transforms, the sailor learns to appreciate the beauty of an ordinary life lived in tune with nature's rhythms."

During the process of working on the film de Wit temporarily moved to Tokyo, so he could work on the film in Studio Ghibli's headquarters.
