Todd McFarlane finally ended two decades of talk and rumor during San Diego Comic-Con 2017, when he announced that the next movie based on his signature character Spawn was finally happening, with horror/thriller movie studio Blumhouse Productions backing it, and McFarlane directing.

While McFarlane has gained something of a reputation for talking more talk than he actually walks, with this big new advancement in his Spawn movie plans, the comic book creator is talking up some big name actors to possibly star in the Spawn reboot – including Leonardo DiCaprio.

Speaking to Vulture, McFarlane admitted that:

Given that the big lead was Twitch [an NYPD Detective who comes to track Spawn], when I was writing, I had Leonardo DiCaprio in my head. I don’t know if people have seen The Wolf of Wall Street, but there is a manicness in him, he was going up and down, and up and down, and up and down; it was almost dizzying, emotionally, to go with him. And there are parts in this movie where I’m going to need an actor to be able to make those moves. Both in terms of normality, in terms of manic, in terms of anger, and in terms of joy – and be able to go to some extremes in it.”

It’s a strange thing to hear that kind of performance associated with the character of Detective Twitch Williams, who (in McFarlane’s own writings) is stoic, soft-spoken, and more observant type of cop – a perfect foil to his loud, bombastic street-savvy partner, Sam. One wonders if McFarlane’s Spawn movie script is staying true to its own character roots…

As for the notion of Leonardo DiCaprio doing a supernatural horror/superhero movie with a budget of $10 million? Don’t hold your breath.

SPAWN Synospis: Covert government assassin Al Simmons is killed after being double-crossed by his boss, Jason Wynn. Upon arriving in Hell, Simmons is offered an opportunity to return to Earth if he’s willing to lead an evil army. He accepts, and is reincarnated as a “Hellspawn” — a twisted, horribly disfigured version of his former self. However, Spawn serves as a force of good, much to the dismay of the Devil’s henchman, a wicked clown.
