When Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 debuted earlier this summer, one line of dialogue took the pop culture world by storm. Yondu‘s (Michael Rooker) exclamation that he’s “Mary Poppins, y’all” took the cultural zeitgeist by storm, launching thousands of memes and fan art.

But according to Guardians writer and director James Gunn, the line wasn’t initially included in the script. While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn revealed that the Mary Poppins exchange between Yondu and Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) was added in at a later stage.

“When I was visualizing the scene, it didn’t look quite as heroic as I intended it to be.” Gunn explained. “So then I put the Poppins line in Peter Quill’s mouth. And Yondu, of course, not knowing the name Mary or Poppins, might think he’s sort of a Lee Marvin type, and he owns it,” said Gunn.”

In the months since Vol. 2‘s release, the Mary Poppins line has become part of the cultural zeitgeist in a new way, even leading to a campaign for Rooker to cameo in the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns. Rooker recently spoke to ComicBook.com about how much the line’s success has surprised him – which makes sense, given the scene’s unique origin.
