Riverdale season 2 will be scarier than the first, with a mystery that threatens the safety of Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica from the first episode, according to showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
Throughout the first season of Riverdale, which tracked the aftermath of a murder that shook the town to its core, fans and critics questioned how the show could retain that feeling for a second year in a row. The answer, it seems, was to draw the danger ever closer to the series' heroes.
"Season 1 was a murder mystery: it was who killed Jason Blossom?" Aguirre-Sacasa explained. "It was a crime that happened in the past. And until the very end, ti was not like our characters were in danger. They were sniffing around a mystery but it wasn't until the last few episodes when you felt like 'Oh my God, something really bad could happen.' Season 2, it's still noir and it's still crime, but it's much more like a suspense thriller and you feel like our characters are at risk in a much more visceral way. So it's I think a scarier season in that way."
The season 2 trailer has already teased a bit of this, with Archie standing watch by his house's doorway with a baseball bat, nervously awaiting a potential intrusion from the black-hooded gunman who shot his dad in the season 1 finale.
Fans will get to see for themselves when Riverdale returns for its second season this fall.
As the town of Riverdale breathed a collective sigh of relief that Jason's killer had been found out, another terrible crime occurred, in a space that had been considered one of the town's safest, most innocent places. If Jason Blossom's murder revealed the slimy underbelly beneath Riverdale's surface, as we enter Season Two, the shooting of Fred Andrews threatens to plunge the entire town into utter darkness.
Riverdale returns to TV for its second season on October 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
