For the first time since the news broke yesterday, Zachary Levi is speaking out about playing Shazam in the upcoming DC Films movie.

Levi took to Instagram, where he shared art imagining him as Shazam created by popular artist BossLogic and wrote a bit about his excitement for the role and all of the work it will entail.

"Honored and greatly humbled to be a part of the #dcuniverse by bringing the original Captain Marvel to life," Levi said, referring to Shazam by the character's original name before DC Comics changed it to Shazam to avoid confusion and legal battles with the Marvel Comics character of the same name. "I am beside myself with gratitude, not only for this opportunity, but also the incredible outpouring of love and support from so many of you out there in the world. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be in the gym for the rest of forever."

Levi isn't kidding about the gym part. He's apparently already hard at work getting in shape for Shazam, partaking in a four-hour gym session.

He's also not kidding about the outpouring of love and support. The fanbase is genuinely excited about Levi playing Shazam.

Now that Levi has been cast as Shazam, DC Films needs to cast Billy Batson, Shazam's young alter ego. Rumors suggest DC Comics is also looking to cast Freddy Freeman, also known as Shazam's sidekick Shazam Jr, to the film and possibly the entire Shazam family, as seen in Geoff Johns' New 52 Justice League series.

Levi first endeared himself to fans by playing the lead role in NBC's comedic spy drama Chuck. He has also appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe playing Fandral in Thor: The Dark World.

Shazam currently has a 3.55 out of 5 ComicBook.com User Anticipation Rating, making it the twentieth most anticipated upcoming comic book movie among ComicBook.com users. Let us know how excited you are about Shazam by giving the film your own personal ComicBook.com User Rating below.

Shazam will open in theaters on April 5, 2019.

Other upcoming DC Extended Universe movies include Justice League on November 17, 2017, Aquaman on December 21, 2018, Wonder Woman 2 on December 13, 2019, Cyborg in 2020, and Green Lantern Corps in 2020.
