Dragon Ball Super Reveals Real Purpose Behind The Universal Survival Arc

This week, Dragon Ball Super sent fans for one intense loop. The anime began a brand-new arc earlier in the month which left the entire cosmos at risk. After approaching the Omni-Kings, Goku was able to convince the pair to hold a multiverse martial arts event for the strongest warriors to fight. However, things went south when fans learned the Omni-Kings were planning to annihilate any universe who loses their matches. Many fans were split about the reveal as some blamed Goku while others questioned the arc's stakes.

But, now, the game has been flipped on its head once more. On Saturday, Dragon Ball Super released its newest episode, and the installment revealed the real reason why the Omni-Kings wanted to host the tournament.

In the latest episode of Dragon Ball Super, fans learned the startling fact about the Omni-Kings and the martial arts rally. On behalf of the duo, the Great Priest confessed to all the universes' gods to cull them for a specific reason: their mortal ranks were too imbalanced.

The term was introduced off-hand, and the Great Priest continued to explain how the system worked. The Omni-Kings had given each universe a ranking based on the inhabited worlds' sophistication. Sadly, Goku's universe was ranked second-to-last with a score of 38.18 while Universe 9 hit rock-bottom with 1.86.

In order to restore order and champion more powerful worlds, the Great Priest says the Omni-Kings will destroy any universe who loses their fight. However, some universes are exempt; Universe 1, 5, 8, and 12 are all safe since they have average mortal ranks above 7. When Goku asked the duo to initiate the tournament, the Omni-Kings felt it was the best way to rid themselves of low-ranking universes.

With the announcement made, the warriors were quick to realize one thing. The universes participating in the tournament were ones destined for destruction, but the martial arts event gives them the chance to save themselves. And, to make things even more tense, the Great Priest confirmed the destroyed universes would also have their God of Destruction killed as well. However, their angel attendants will be spared and allocated elsewhere.

This month, Dragon Ball Super's story arc kicked off the 'Universal Survival' saga. You can check out the brief synopsis for it below:

"At Goku's request, the Omni-Kings' "Tournament of Power" martial arts tournament between universes now begins! …But this also proves to be the beginning of universal destruction. What awaits the victors of this tournament, and the vanquished…?! How will these intense team battles between the elites of each universe turn out…?!"

As for the saga's start date, the new arc premiered on February 5, 2017. The "Universal Survival" saga is part of the recent simulcast agreement that sites like Crunchyroll and Funimation have scored. Dragon Ball Super airs on Crunchyroll Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. CST. Toonami will begin airing the English dub on Adult Swim Saturdays at 11:30 p.m.
