38 Years Later, Dragon Ball Is Due Yet Another Backstory For Vegeta With Manga’s Return

Dragon Ball Super revived the series after two decades when Akira Toriyama returned with a brand new story for fans. While Toriyama served as the writer of the new manga, Toyotaro continued working with him as the illustrator. The series takes place not long after the Majin Buu Saga, focusing on the lives of Goku, his family, and the Z Fighters. This also includes Vegeta, who has changed significantly after the main story. Vegeta was introduced in the manga 38 years ago in Chapter 204 of the Saiyan Saga. While he was initially introduced as a major villain, he went through countless trials and tribulations to become the person he is today. The series also revealed everything he had to suffer because of Frieza.

Vegeta’s character development happened throughout the course of the story. Instead of turning him into a completely different person overnight, Toriyama ensured that his progress would seem even more fulfilling. The main story already introduced his father, the proud King Vegeta, who had no choice but to bow to Frieza if he wanted his planet to survive. Although it’s believed his mother is also dead, the series never revealed anything about her, not even her face. However, after the latest official alternate cover by Toyotaro, it’s more evident than ever that Dragon Ball Super needs to explore more about his past.

The cover shows the first glimpse of Vegeta’s mother in 38 years after his introduction. While it doesn’t actually reveal her face, fans do get confirmation that she was alive around the time Vegeta and his brother were kids. His mother is still a mystery to fans, but this first glimpse clearly points towards a possibility of another backstory. Toyotaro also confirmed that the idea of introducing Vegeta’s mother came to his mind suddenly.

This could also mean that fans might know more about her and Vegeta’s childhood if Dragon Ball Super returns. This wouldn’t only add more character depth to the Saiyan Prince, but also answer several questions about his mother. The manga has been on an indefinite hiatus since Toriyama’s death in March 2024. In February next year, Toyotaro returned with a special chapter before taking another long break.

The artist will be taking over the helm in both art and story, and he clearly has big shoes to fill. The long hiatus is reasonable considering the pressure he has been facing to live up to fans’ expectations. While the manga doesn’t have a return date yet, Toyotaro has already confirmed he will be returning with the manga. While fans await the manga’s return, Dragon Ball Super will be continuing the story in the Galactic Patrol anime, which will continue the story after the Tournament of Power Arc.
