Breaking down the choices made here there are notable absences such as any transformation in Dragon Ball – as fans in the West would undoubtedly vote for any of the Super Saiyan transformations – Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac, or prolific mech anime like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Those major absences could be explained by Docomo not holding the streaming licenses for those shows. The site could have wanted its users to celebrate its properties in full.
While the poll results are limited to series titles, it’s not hard to imagine why some series rank above others. Kill la Kill is a series full of Super Sentai-like transformations, so it’s no wonder it ranks so highly with both men and women in Japan. It’s more adult bend and Trigger’s curvaceous character design also explains why it might rank higher for men than it does women.
The top spots in the Japanese men’s poll are dominated by magical girl transformations with Yuki Yuna is a Hero, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Flip Flappers, and Senki Zessho Symphogear surprisingly ranking as high as they do.
Counter that to the women’s top choices and you have the magical girl parody show featuring cute transforming boys, Cute High Earth Defense Club Love!, unsurprising legacy choices like Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura, and the more action heavy series in these lists like Blue Exorcist, World Trigger, and Attack on Titan.
