The world of K-pop just got shook in a big way. The industry is filled with talented idol groups, but nobody is shining brighter these days than BTS. The seven-member group has infiltrated radio waves around the globe, but the band's latest move has sent fans into a social media frenzy.
After all, that is what happens when a group changes its name.
Since BTS debuted in 2013, the group's name has acted as an acronym for Bangtan Sonyeondan (방탄소년단), a phrase which loosely translates to 'Bulletproof Boy Scouts' in English. However, it looks like the band is now working to rebrand itself in the wake of their increasing global popularity. BTS' entertainment company BigHit has officially announced the band is switching to a new name 'Beyond the Scene.'
According to BigHit, Beyond the Scene is mean to define BTS as "boys who prevent oppression and prejudice against teenagers. The name also is meant to represent "youth that does not settle down in reality but grows constantly toward dreams." The name change appears to be a thematic one which capitalizes on BTS' socially progressive lyrics and booming young-adult fanbase. The group's most recent concepts have focused heavily on the idea of adolescence, so it is no surprise to hear BTS wants to continue exploring the complex issue in their impending comebacks.
For Korean fans, they will not notice a shift in branding; BTS has no plans at this time to ditch its original name abroad. English-speaking fans will be the audiences affected by the change, and BTS has even released a new video debuting the band's update logo in light of Beyond the Scene's reveal.
Naturally, fans of BTS are freaking out over the change as they come to terms with the shift. Some fans have vocalized concerns about the change while others are ready to support the group as they just wrapped their extensive world tour. For now, the name change seems to signal BTS' interest in exploring the global music market more so following their recent win at the Billboard Music Awards, so fans better get used to seeing Beyond the Scenes in the U.S. soon.

K-pop is becoming increasingly well-known for its intricate musical comebacks, and BTS is leading the charge. The group's new logo is minimal, but it shows the open door which the group says exists between it and fans. So, really, it's no shock to hear fans are loving the design.prevnext

With so many monikers, BTS will have a hard time solidifying itself under one brand. BTS. Bangtan Boys. Bangtan Sonyeondan. Beyond the Scenes. There's a lot of names to keep up with these days.prevnext

For some fans, the decision to change BTS' name to Beyond the Scene was a no-brainer. Getting chills is always a good sign if you're excited. Hopefully, fans who weren't pleased by the transition won't be left in the cold for too long.prevnext
who cares if it's not Bulletproof Boy Scouts anymore and it's now Beyond The Scene when our boys are still the same they're still our dorks.— 민윤기 is 뭔들 (@girlsgenratlon) July 5, 2017
When it comes down to it, a name does not make a band - the members do. BTS is still the same whether it stands for Beyond the Scene or Barely There Spice. So long as the members remain the same then everything is good.prevnext
I personally don't care too much whether BTS stands for Bulletproof Boyscouts or Beyond the Scene.. They're still BTS/방탄소년단 ?— ?고기나무?GA-pinned (@GokiNamoo) July 5, 2017
As BTS continues to grow, fans will get to see how this name change will affect their aesthetic if at all. The alteration was made to suit the boys' interests rather than to direct their futures. So, for now, fans should keep an open mind as BTS wades through any confusion surrounding their name.prev
