In the coming months, Ghost in the Shell fans will be put through the ringer. For better or worse, the live-action adaptation of the iconic anime franchise will hit U.S. theaters thanks to Rupert Sanders. The acclaimed director opted to bring Major Motoko Kusangi to life with Scarlett Johansson at his side, and fans are hoping the film will break Hollywood’s anime adaptation curse. For many, it is Mamoru Oshii who holds the definitive vision of Ghost in the Shell, and now the director is making a comeback.

And, no, it has nothing to do with Ghost in the Shell.
Over on Toonami, a five-part miniseries directed by Oshii will be making its U.S. debut in March. The late-night block has just released a trailer for the anticipated project, and it shows off the film’s use of both CG and live-action footage.
Here’s the official synopsis of “Sand Whale and Me” courtesy of Toonami:
“Presented in a hybrid live action/CG style, “Sand Whale and Me” is the story of a female paratrooper in the distant future who is stranded in a vast desert. With limited supply of food and water, her only hope is to catch a Sand Whale from a pack. If she can’t, her life may just hang in the balance.”
The miniseries has a total run-time of 25 minutes. Its music was composed by Kenji Kawai while Atsuki Sato helms its CG effects. The latter creator has worked on projects like Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence and Halo Legends. Dango Takeda was in-charge of costuming while stars Hinako Saeki and Yoshikatsu Fujiki play leads.
