Cassandra Nova Can Be the Next Magneto (but Marvel Is Too Scared to Pull the Trigger)

The X-Men are in a spot that they haven’t been in a long time โ€“ the next big thing. They’re about to become the center of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing what amounts to a mini-Marvel Universe of heroes, villains, and supporting characters with them. This process has already begun, with MCU fans introduced to one of the team’s best villains in Deadpool/Wolverine: Cassandra Nova. Nova was first introduced in Grant Morrison’s spectacular New X-Men run, the main villain of their X-Men redefining classic “E Is for Extinction”. She played a key role in that book and Astonishing X-Men, earning a spot among the X-Men roster of amazing antagonists. Since then, Nova has been a fan-favorite villain, appearing in numerous X-stories, a movie, and as the villain of Batman/Deadpool (which was written by Morrison).

The X-Men have, in my humble opinion (who am I kidding, none of my opinions are humble), the best villains in comics and the proof is in the pudding. Numerous X-villains have reached levels of popularity where the House of Ideas couldn’t keep them as villains, with Magneto leading this number. The mutant master of magnetism has been one of the most complex characters in comics since the ’80s, and has reached a level of development (and popularity) where he’s not really even a villain anymore. He played an important role in the X-Men’s rogue gallery, acting as the perfect ideological opposite to the group and they need someone else in that role. However, they have the perfect villain for it in Nova, who could easily become the team’s new Magneto.

Cassandra Nova Can Slot Into the Magneto Position

New X-Men was an amazing time for readers because it lived up to its name. Marvel had been playing the X-Men hits since legendary writer Chris Claremont had left the book and fans had gotten tired of it. Morrison took the building blocks of the X-Men โ€“ the Phoenix Force, Weapon X, the Shi’Ar, evolution, bigotry, the Hellfire Club, Sentinels, Genosha โ€“ and did new things with them. In a lot of ways, Morrison was recreating the X-Men in their image. In fact, you can look at Cassandra Nova as their version of Magneto.

Magneto was introduced to be the opposite of Charles Xavier; where Chuck wanted peace and cooperation, he wanted mutant supremacy. Nova fills the same role. She was the evil opposite of Xavier; she didn’t want mutants to thrive and grow, she just wanted to hurt Charles Xavier, to destroy his life because of petty revenge. As the book went on, Morrison would reveal that Nova was actually the dark mirror of Xavier โ€“ she was a Mummudrai, a being from the Astral Plane that represented the exact opposite of the Professor. Everyone has one and sometimes, they try to kill you in the womb, taking your place. Xavier won the contest, but Nova was able to use his mutant genetics to create a new body, becoming the powerful villain we know and love today.

Morrison was giving the X-Men a villain who could be the Magneto of their run and it worked like gangbusters. Nova was the book’s main villain through issue #126, closing out the first year of the book. She had taken over Xavier’s mind at the end of “E Is for Extinction”, using his powers to destroy the Shi’Ar Empire, and was eventually defeated. While the Scottish scribe would bring the actual Magneto into the book as their run went on, Nova was their attempt at making their own mutant master of magnetism and it was honestly pretty successful.

Marvel has tried to fit numerous villains into the Magneto-shaped hole in the X-Men and none of them have fit. The group has changed a lot, to the extent that Xavier’s old dream doesn’t really fit them in the same way anymore. Nowadays, the X-Men are more about mutant survival and that’s what makes Nova into the perfect replacement for Mags. She’s the ultimate example of a mutant gone wrong, one who doesn’t want to build a better world for her people. She just wants to burn it all down, hurting humans, mutants, and anyone else who gets in her way.

Currently, she’s a member of 3K, the evil Beast’s group that’s trying to create a virus that would make everyone a mutant, throwing the world in chaos. Usually, her goals are much more destructive, doing her best to destroy mutantkind just to get back at Xavier, but she’s changed, becoming something new and altogether more terrifying. She’s a representation of the worst way mutants could turn out and she’s not interested in building a safe new world for mutants.

This is the perfect opposition to what the X-Men currently are. They want to build a new world where everyone can have their space and learn to work together, whereas Nova just wants to watch everything burn down, a world where only the powerful have a chance at survival. Back in the Silver Age, Magneto presented a different version of the dream, one that said mutant supremacy was the way to go. Today, Nova is the dark side of what mutantkind could be, the destructive promise of every mutant humanity fears. She’s everything wrong with mutants in one terrifying package.

Cassandra Nova Is the Perfect Modern X-Villain

The X-Men have the best villains in comics and even among this number, Nova is something special. She was created to be the Magneto of the early stages of Morrison’s team-redefining run and her growth over the last few decades has readied her to take that position full-time. The X-Men are in something of a pickle right now and a paucity of villains is just one problem that needs solving. The team also needs some kind of direction, something that hooks readers and keep them coming back. They need a new big bad and luckily, Cassandra Nova is right there.

The X-Men have become something very different in the years since House of M. A lot of the old villains don’t really work in the same way anymore and the Krakoa Era changed the way we looked at mutant villains. The team is in flux right now and they’re going to need a villain that grabs attention, that opposes them perfectly, and Nova is perfect for that. Her goals have always been the exact opposite of the X-Men, something that can be used in the future to place her as the group’s main nemesis. She has everything you could want from a Magneto-level villain (except for the cool helmet) and Marvel needs to finally pull the trigger. She was made for this.
