Earlier today, NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment released the Injustice 2 announce trailer. Fans have been viewing the trailer practically on repeat since then, and one ComicBook.com reader noticed a potentially revealing detail.
When the trailer opens, we see the DC Comics, Warner Bros. Games, and NetherRealm Studios logos flash on the screen. Between those logos are diagrams of artifacts from the DC Universe. First is Batman's cowl, and then Aquaman's trident. The final object is a gun, but, as ComicBook.com reader Austin Snyder noticed, it isn't just any gun, but Captain Cold's cold gun. Zooming in reveals a profile of Cold, a.k.a. Leonard Snart.
There are a few different things this could mean. On one hand, it could just be a little Easter egg thrown into the trailer. DC Entertainment and its collaborators are fond of that kind of fan service. On the other, it could be a sign that Captain Cold will be included in the game. Of course, if that's the case and NetherRealm was going to place a clue in such plain sight, why not just reveal Cold along with Supergirl, Gorilla Grodd, and Atrocitus?
The third option is that Cold's gun will appear in the game, but not Captain Cold himself. The press release sent out with the trailer revealed that Injustice 2 will feature a system that allows players to customize the game's characters by collecting "unique and powerful gear earned throughout the game." Cold's gun is definitely "unique and powerful," so perhaps it – along with Batman's cowl and Aquaman's trident – are examples of the kinds of gear players can collect on while playing the game.
Let's tack this on to our list of questions that will hopefully be addressed by NetherRealm and/or WB Games at E3 next week. Injustice 2 is scheduled for release in 2017.
