The winter finale of Gotham left one character for dead, several in new potential positions of power, one now ready to embrace his destiny, and the city needing to recover from the brink of total meltdown once again. But the Court of Owls also came forward in a new way, revealing another member of their organization – with a surprising tie to one of our main players.
The first named male member of the Court of Owls is revealed, and it’s Frank Gordon. Yes, that’s James Gordon’s uncle, and it seems, advocate within the Court. When Frank is first revealed, it’s alongside Court of Owls member Kathryn (no last name known), as they watch Gotham City burn. Frank tells Kathryn that the GCPD deserves their chance to fix things and take care of Jerome and his acolytes. Kathryn replies that his faith is touching (specifically since it’s in a particular person, as it turns out, his nephew).
Before he’s officially revealed, Kathryn and Frank have another conversation, with Kathryn telling Frank that if he can’t convince Jim to join them, he knows what must be done. He agrees, telling her, “I know, no one refuses the Court.”
He then knocks on Jim’s door, and is welcomed with open arms.
So, what does this mean about the Court of Owls plans and Jim Gordon’s future? Well, the fact they’ve taken an interest in him at all is notable: it means Jim has made an impact on Gotham City and its welfare. After all, Gotham City’s welfare is what the Court claims to be all about. Clearly, things are going to come to a head there, and if Jim, misguided by his uncle and the Court’s stated intentions, does join them even temporarily, it could lead to him clashing with Bruce and Alfred in a major way.
We won’t know for sure what Frank Gordon and the Court of Owls’ plan for Jim Gordon is until the series returns on April 24, 2017. For now, we’ll have to ponder that – plus what Dopple-Bruce’s role in their plan is and what that map hidden in the crystal owl meant – to ourselves for the next few months.
