We all know The Rock is heading to the DC Universe – as the actor has been teasing production meetings and the Shazam film for months now.

We also know that The Rock will portray legendary DC villain Black Adam. The ancient wizard is the nemesis of Shazam, and causes huge issues for the entire group of DC heroes.
If you’ve been reading DC comics for a while, you’ll recognize Black Adam as the epic supervillain he’s always been. However, newer readers might see the character in a different light.
The most recent iterations of Black Adam have pegged him as more of an anti-hero, or a man with a grudge who’s desperately trying to clear his name. Adam has only taken on this role for about half of his character’s span, but it looks like this is the version we are going to get from The Rock and the DCEU.
Beau Flynn, one of Shazam‘s producers, shared one of The Rock’s posts on Instagram, and added his own message to it. In Flynn’s post, he called Black Adam “one of the most powerful anti-heroes on the planet”.
This may not have seemed like much, but that statement clearly reveals which Black Adam fans are going to get. Instead of the mega-villain overlord that classic readers may be used to, the newer, much more accessible Black Adam is who we will see on-screen.
This may not be a surprise, given that Geoff Johns – who is in charge of the entire DC Extended Universe – was one of the writers who brought about that change in Adam.
This also gives DC the Loki-esque character that it’s been missing. In addition to the evil villains that currently exist in the universe, Black Adam will be a likeable bad guy that audiences enjoy seeing in the film.
The Rock has teased that Black Adam will appear in multiple DCEU films, so we’re going to be seeing a lot more of him down the road.
