The Flash: Five Predictions For the Remainder of Season 3

What’s next on The Flash?

That’s the question, right? When the first half of season 3 concluded back in December, it left audiences with a lot of questions, and a very scary and disconcerting view of the future.

How it all comes together is anybody’s guess, but given what we know, it can be fun to try and see what we think will happen in the coming weeks and months.

We’ve got almost five months to be proven right, so let’s get a little bit crazy with our speculation here. The next few pages will tell you where we think The Flash might go next…!

While up to this point in season 3, The Flash has dealt with the fallout of “Flashpoint,” an alternate timeline he created at the end of season 2, that’s taking a backseat in the second half of the season to Barry’s attempts to prevent the speed god Savitar from killing Iris West — something he saw when he accidentally traveled to the future. The second half of season 3 will also see another crossover with Supergirl – this one a musical crossover featuring the singing talents of stars Melissa Benoist and Grant Gustin, who both appeared on Glee before their superhero careers.

Supergirl airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT; The Flash on Tuesdays at the same time, followed by DC’s Legends of Tomorrow at 9 p.m.; Arrow on Wednesdays at 8. New episodes return the last week in January.

SETTING SOME BOUNDARIES

If there’s one thing the first half of the season — and especially the “Invasion!” crossover — showed, it’s that The Flash needs to establish some pretty firm rules for when, why, and how to time-travel.

Barry tinkering in the past has created some pretty catastrophic results, and now he’s seen the future. Does that mean trying to prevent the horrors to come is equally dangerous?

With DC’s Legends of Tomorrow following The Flash on Tuesday nights, the Scarlet Speedster probably doesn’t want to get too deep into the weeds with time travel. That’s their territory, and so far, the lovable losers on board the Waverider have been pretty good at setting and abiding by (or at least bending with a design) their own set of rules.

Still, as much as you don’t want to force your audience to sit through two (possibly conflicting) hours of time travel philosophy, we’re guessing it won’t take very long before Barry, Jay, and maybe an expert or two from the cast of one of the two shows, starts to lay the foundation for how time travel will work on The Flash moving forward.

ROMANCE FOR CISCO?

It’s been a while since there was even the thought of Cisco having some kind of personal life — but it seems to us that he really needs one right about now.

Still reeling from the death of Dante and the later revelation that it was somehow Barry’s fault that his brother died, Cisco has been lost and vulnerable for a while now. He’s finally starting to recover…

…and in comes Gypsy.

A character who teamed with Vibe, Vixen, and a handful of other heroes on the ’80s’ notorious “Justice League Detroit,” Gypsy is expected to make her way to Central City soon…and we’re guessing that whether it’s a standard romance or just a “very close super-friends” relationship, Gypsy will be the one to help him really power through the challenges ahead while shedding some of the baggage of the last few months.

SUITING UP

Okay, so this one’s kind of cheating, since we’ve already seen some evidence.

Still, it seems like it’s time for Vibe and Killer Frost to get costumes. They’ve already chipped in during fights more than once, and even Diggle — who didn’t have time travelers, multiversal doppelgangers, or other metahuman threats to go up against all the time — eventually started trying to hide his identity on Arrow.

JAY GARRICK

It’s no secret we’re going to be seeing more Jay Garrick as the season progresses.

We’re thinking the big surprise for fans will be seeing how the relationship between Jay and Barry develops, as Jay grows into more of a mentoring figure for Barry and less of a kind of almost antagonistic character like he’s been so far, questioning Barry’s decisions and making him feel a little uneasy due to his being Henry Allen’s doppelganger.

Of course, in the comics, Jay and Barry had a great many adventures together — both in the pre-Crisis era when they needed to travel the multiverse to do so and in the post-Crisis when Jay was just an older guy.

And we can’t wait to see how that pans out.

A DEEP DIVE INTO MYTHOLOGY

“Why does there always have to be a speedster?” 

That’s the question we hear the most from fans a little tired of “the same” villain year in and year out.

But as with the Reverse-Flash and Zoom, we think Savitar’s primary function isn’t just to be another fast guy Barry can punch, but to help shed some light on the mythology of the Speed Force, and to help provide Barry with the information and the skills he needs to become The Flash that the world needs when the Crisis comes along.

Is it too much to hope, then, that along with a look at Savitar’s mythology and the pseudo-science of the Speed Force, we might get a look at characters like Johnny Quick or Max Mercury, who battled Savitar in generations past in the comics?
